Contextual Influences - Matte Painting

Metro 2033 credits

At the ending of this game they use a Matte Painting for the scenery as it made it easier to render and in a shorter amount of time this is also an easier process as its a composition built up of digital imagery and photoshop painting to blend the imagery together and make it look as part of one image. In the industry of all kinds of multi-media they use Matte Painting to speed up the production instead of making the actual set in either life or 3D software. A good example of this other than this game is in Lord of the Rings for their castles/ forts and massive Armies.

Matte Painting could be a pathway of mine in the future as it is closely linked with concept art and still in the area of choice

Contextual Influences - Matte Painting

Matte Painting is the use of simple sketches and photoshop painting along with found imagery to generate a single composition to use as a back drop for films or games. A good example of this is from Lord of the Rings as they used a painting of an army instead of having millions of people stood there, this is as it was cheeper and quicker to make and produce as a main scene. A Matte Painter could produce a single shot in a matter of weeks where as the set would take months maybe years for build and to be produced.

Contextual Influences - Dynasty Warriors

Dynasty Warriors has been one of my all time favorite games for many years now and they have kept my attention for a while with their old fashioned art work and consistant style in game play and characters in general. This game is set in the middle ages of china so its a hack and slash game which can be repetative but you have a varation of objectives, missions and locations.
This is a more of a modern version of the character Guan Yu.

Contextual Influences - Keith Haring

Keith Haring
As part of a project for doodling I was researching artists who worked in the style of doodling or that looked like doodles and I came across Keith Haring in which his pieces of work are good with bright bold lines and colours that looked like marker pen. Some of his work can be sexually orientated.

Contextual Influences - Concept art

Fallout 3
The concept art for Fallout 3 is really great and is also one of my favorite games. The characters and monsters that they have created show how much time and effort that has been put into creating such a successful game like this. Fallout is set in the wastelands of Washington after a nuclear bombing in the year 2277
One of the main bad mutations out in the wastelands of Washington

Remnants of robots some are restored
The Concept art is very very detailed and just a few of these show how much effort has gone into the creation of this game. As a gamer this has to be one of the best games made and I would recommend it to anyone else who loves gaming and role laying games.

Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy is one of my favorite Japanese role playing games it has both amazing art work and gripping storyline. Each game has a different concept to it weather its a new part of the game or a different battle system all together. The company Square Enix are always making new versions of each game they have made for different platforms comes different graphic styles like for the Nintendo DS they have childish anime and for the Xbox and PS3 they have more mature/ grown up anime graphics.

Final Fantasy 12 (PS2)

Final Fantasy 13 (Xbox/ PS3)

Concept Artist
Concept art is one of my favorite areas as it is the very first stage of visually designing a game. Concept artists are normally given a background story of a character and or a few features like weather they are good or bad, rich or poor, and a few other simple traits. Concept artists also design landscapes or scenes of a game and some even model them.

Contextual Influences

David Hockney

David was born 1937 as a draughts man and painter and he was educated in the ways of art at Bradford College of art then later at royal college of art in London where he was featured in an exhibition along side of Peter Blake. He started in pop art and expressionist elements but soon went on to do photomontage like in the images below.

this image is one of my favorites as it reminds me of something being built up with post-stick notes and i also like how the image is almost perfectly aligned.

Game Characters

Using Egypt myth and other ancient stories related I created a set of 3 characters related with my story. I started off my characters using a simple silouhette and building up my characters with clothing and other types of manipulation like alteration of their figure and head.
Anubis
Horus
Osiris
Using Illustrator I live traced my initial sketches and to make them clean solid lines so that I could colour specific areas easier with out worring about other areas, I also used photoshop to add textures and shading.

Time project

I was asked to create a poster which would capture an aspect of time. As time is a vast subject I decided to create a large mind map which would branch off to all different aspects of time and shows how they are linked to others. After making this I chose 3 different part of the mind map which are still closely related and still easy to include as many of the into my poster. I chose: Evolution, Technology and Clocks.
Final Poster
I used Photoshop to put all of this together but I used the majority of my experiments to create this as it was easier than just starting all over again.

Safe and Sound Project

For this project I was asked to design a poster to suit 13 - 16 year olds. I researched a few designers to give me ideas of imagery and layout. When I was designing the poster I looked at layout and colour and used other posters as influence for my final design.
Final Poster
I used Illutrator to create this piece as it is easier to create this as you can change the text so its outlines and you can manipulate the points (vectors) to how you want them to be. Illustrator is also easier to change the type around as you dont have to mess about with layers as you do in Photoshop
